Customer-specific liquid crystal mixtures from Merck

LCDs have revolutionized communication: Many everyday applications, for example notebook computers, mobile telephones, or automobile navigation systems, are hardly conceivable without them. Merck has been active in the liquid crystal business for over 40 years. By continuously developing customer-specific liquid crystal mixtures together with display manufacturers, Merck has become the leading manufacturer of these materials worldwide. Our products are used in displays for applications such as LCD TVs, notebooks and PC monitors, mobile phones, digital cameras, automotive displays, navigation systems, etc.

Innovative LC mixtures and advanced LC materials

Intensive research and the continuous development of new liquid crystal molecules for enhanced performance enable Merck to provide innovative LC mixture concepts for improved liquid crystal performance and reliability. Under the brand name licristal^®, Merck offers display mixtures for modern display technologies such as VA (Vertical Alignment), PS-VA (Polymer-Stabilized VA), IPS (In-Plane Switching) and FFS (Fringe Field Switching), particularly suited for optimized viewing angles and switching times. Combined with novel lighting technologies such as dimmable LEDs, these technologies also contribute to enhanced brightness and contrast with reduced energy consumption. As a matter of course, Merck continuously tests the latest generations of LC mixtures in its cell technology and reliability laboratories.

In addition, Merck is actively developing advanced LC materials, among them photo-polymerizable liquid crystals called reactive mesogens (RMs). licrivue^® RM materials from Merck are suited as precursors for optical films for the improvement of the optical characteristics and the performance of LCDs.

Leader in OLED materials and organic electronics

Merck is also a leader in the development and manufacture of innovative materials for OLED displays, marketed under the brand name livilux^®. Merck is the only supplier offering both small molecules and polymer materials for OLEDs. Our products are used especially in displays for mobile phones, MP3 players, and PDAs.

Merck's advanced organic semiconductor materials, branded lisicon^®, are suited for organic thin-film transistor (O-TFT) backplanes which can be used for flexible LCDs, OLEDs and electrophoretic displays (also-called E-paper). This application is typically realized by inexpensive printing processes at ambient conditions.
